                         As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord ´

Sheep, pictured in fairy tales as sweet, precious little animals who are cuddly and comforting, yet if you've ever visited a sheep farm, petting zoo, or a county fair and walked among the sheep you may have made a much different observation.  Sheep are noisy, they don't often smell nice, they tend to be dirty, and, well, they're not the smartest animal ever created. How strange that God's people are referred to as "sheep".  Or is it all that strange?

 

Today’s Focus: "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young."  (Isaiah 40:11)

 

The picture this paints is one of a Loving Shepherd who will lower Himself to pick up a lost sheep, noisy, smelly, and dirty, and hold that beast to His breast and carry it to safety while leading the others where He intends for them to go.  Galatians 5:22-23 describes in detail for us the "fruit of the Spirit" which is "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance" all of which are displayed in the picture of today's focus, "He shall feed His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young."  Amen?

 

Let us Pray: “Dear Lord, guide us as the Gentle Shepherd, take us into Your tender care.  Nourish us, rescue us, lead us, and comfort us.  Thank You for Your undeserved mercy toward us.  O’ how we love You, Shepherd of thy soul!  Help us to cast down the weights that hold us back, to flee from sin, and to lay down the burdens of this world so we run this race until we’re totally spent, and then run some more.  We know we should be running, pursuing You against all odds, allowing our flesh to endure the pain in order to apprehend the reward.  Father, thank You that You provided a way for making each of us Your child and for clothing us in Your righteousness.  Thank You for making it possible for us to call You Father and to have Jesus as our older Brother.  Remove the heart of selfishness, O’ God, that keeps us from caring for the downtrodden, abused, forgotten, and broken.  Give us Your eyes of concern and Jesus' heart of compassion to see them and minister through the Word to them.  Father, we thank You for Your love which covers the multitude of sin, we thank You for looking at us through Your eyes of love and restoring us to full fellowship with You as we learn to "be careful, what we do".  Help us, Father, to walk in Your ways, to follow in Your path, to obey Your Word. Help us to express our love to You through our obedience.  You are worthy of all our love, You are worthy of our obedience.  Lord, when we are weak, because of You we can be strong, when we are poor, because of You we are rich, all because of what You've done for us, and we give thanks to You!  With a humble heart we bow before You and give thanks, not only because it's Your will, but because it is our heart’s cry today to let You know how grateful we are.  In Jesus' precious Name, Amen and Amen.”

 

In and of ourselves we bear all the attributes of sheep yet our Gentle Shepherd still reaches down from His heavenly estate, picks us up when we find ourselves tangled in the affairs of this life, holds us close to His breast, and carries us to safety while He leads all His sheep to a place of nourishing pastures.

 

Hallelujah!  What a Saviour!

 

“As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.”  (Ezekiel 34:12)
