Comrades-in-Arms -
The above title is apparently translated "Axe-Play", from a
fifteenth-century Burgundian manuscript instructing warriors. I was
quite taken with the anonymous author's Christian perspective in this
old manual (reproduced on-line) and thought some of y'all might
appreciate it, too. He writes in his introduction that "every human
and rational creature must keep himself in good estate, and arm
himself first with good spiritual armor, that is to say with the
beautific virtues to defend himself and to resist all vices and
diabolic temptations; preserving the soul from eternal death..." Only
then does the unknown master suggest studying mere physical weapons.
The rest of this fascinating document...is only fascinating, if
you actually care about the details of medieval scrapping - if you
like that sort of thing I can direct you to the page. But for
DragonRaid purposes I just thought it was interesting how an actual
armored warrior made reference to the spiritual allegory. As an axe
specialist he'd need "Hatred of Evil" in the DR world, as well...after
running through his tactical descriptions, I wouldn't want to be the
evil arousing his ire.
