In many cultures, the drum was also used as a weapon of war. It kept the
march beat, of course, and acted often as a call to arms. The Bodhran,
or Irish drum, was originally a war drum. At least in Celtic cultures,
the women fought alongside the men in battle, and were often players of
the bodhran.
I also like the idea of a band of pipers. Did you know that the bagpipe
was once outlawed as a weapon of war? ("Ye Scots wha hae wi' Wallace
bled...") I just took up the bagpipe, or at least the chanter. Soon as
I learn to play the daft thing, I'll let ye know.
Off subject just a bit: In looking through a catalog of things Celtic,
one of the tartans offered (two, actually, one blue, one green) are called
"Clergy". I'm considering getting a kilt in the blue one, and a pipe bag
to match. Anybody besides my wife think I'm crazy? Hoot, mon. :-)
By the way, I have written a piece for two pianos (or two keyboards)
entitled, "Grail". I'm in the process of orchestrating it. I'm taking
an orchestration class this semester, and I figure I oughta get my
money's worth. If anyone is interested, I could record it on tape and
send it to you. It's kinda pretty. Or wee bonnie, if you're Scottish.
In the OLMN,
Dave Milner
