A good way to let your players know animals can be food, too - by using the CA to demonstrate the limited intelligence. The problem coming into play here is the concept of talking to animals you could possibly eat; think of CA as allowing the barrier of communication to be lifted - but not the intelligence of the animal. Don't let the players have a conversation with the animal! Just allow a dumb animal to convey their limited knowledge (what you would imagine an average forest/desert/?? animal knowing about their surroundings) - very specifically vague. "Is there danger ahead?" What's dangerous to the animal - monster or water? The more "brutish" answer the animal gives, the more obvious their animal status is - the easier it is to eat it.
