I was thinking that it would be cool to tie in some of the new
testament symbology with the old testament like we see in the word.  If
you study the old testament symbols and texts you can find all kinds of
abstract references to the cross and christ and all that stuff so I
thought having the starlots reflect back to the great ice age might be
a way of pointing forward to the messiahs sacrifice:  "So you see,
Lightraider, the Overlord's sacrifice was foreshadowed even in the
great ice age of Norak's time when the ice had all but disappeared
leaving behind gemstones in the crust of the mountains.  These early
gemstones dimly reflected the same light of salvation that would be
seen more clearly in the sacrifice of our messiah and his victory over
the great wyrms!  This is why the gnomish and dwarven people love
gemstones so much, for their cultures most closely keep the memory of
that time in Talania's history when mankind was delivered from God's
judgement by taking refuge in the warmth below."

 Something like that, but you can take it or leave it as you wish.  I
personally like it!
