I was unaware that it was a hoax, but I realized it was a futile effort. If everyone in the USA read and followed these instructions in protest, then there would be a higher volume of sales just before and after. Net effect: None. Demand on gas does not change in the short term, only in the long term. If gas prices were to go to say, $4.00 / gallon and then stay there, people would start car pooling, cancel their summer cross country drive, and when they next purchased a car, get one with more fuel efficiency. They might even use the bus or metro to get to work. Reducing the demand on gas requires major effort, which in turn requires a major motivating factor. In all probability, this is why the gas price fluctuates so much. Why car pool if gas is 90 cents a gallon, why start one if the price is going to drop again in a couple weeks. If the gas out would have worked with 100% of Americans doing it, guess what fraction of Americans would get the message in time, and of that fraction, how many would remember and care? The best way to fight higher prices is to get a more fuel efficient car, or make your car more fuel efficient. That way, your personal demand will drop some.
