Read the Bible in a year by reading First Chronicles 10--12 today The Desire to Be First Can Be Good Or Bad By Don Ruhl Joab was first at the right time and at the wrong time. Now David said, "Whoever attacks the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain." And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and became chief. (1Ch. 11:6) This was good. Joab was ready and eager to eliminate people whom God wanted eliminated. Joab was not afraid to fight, but he was courageous. On the other hand, his desire to be first was so strong that he killed others who threatened his position as general or men whom David actually put in his place. Later Solomon had Joab put to death at the direction of his father for having killed innocent men. Wise is he who knows when to be first and when to be last. Do you know when to be first and when to be last?
