Read the Bible in a year by reading Ezra 9 and 10 today

A True Mourner
By Don Ruhl

Some leaders of the Jews told Ezra that their brethren had married pagan women, which violated the Law of God. Ezra was devastated, because this was one of the very things that led to the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities! Here were the worshipers of Yahweh God violating the same laws again! Be sure to read Ezra chapters 9 and 10 to see the deep mourning of Ezra and eventually of the people. Chapter 9 shows one of the most beautiful and humble prayers in the Bible. It is full of true mourning over the presence of sin. It makes you realize that tagging at the end of prayers, "Forgive us of our sins," can be thoughtless. Listen to the opening words of this remarkable prayer,

"O my God, I am too ashamed and humiliated to lift up my face to You, my God; for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens" (Ea. 9:6).

Ezra knew that God forgives sin, but Ezra did not take that lightly. He knew that sin offends our God. Yes, God is generous with grace and mercy, but do we comprehend the expense for God to be generous with grace and mercy? He sacrificed His precious Son Jesus the Christ! While the Father did not send His Son for Ezra and his generation, he still understood that sin and its forgiveness were not like having a cold. Sin is a serious matter, that left in place, will destroy a soul forever.

Please think about these things through the day, remembering the great offense that sin is toward God, but that He wants to forgive you, but it cost Him His Son. Jesus died for us because of our sins.

Question from the text: What was nature doing that added to the trembling of the people?

Do you like the power of words? Do you like meaningful play of words? Go to Mardy Grothe's web site, www.chiasmus.com

This is not a "religious" site, but it is for people who recognize how the right arrangement of words helps you to remember truth and makes a point. Solomon knew that the proper arrangement and setting of words is as a goad. Read what he said in Ecclesiastes 12:9-11, then go to Mardy's site. Tell him Don Ruhl sent you.
