Read the Bible in a year by reading Esther 6-8 today

How Others Will Fall Before You
By Don Ruhl

King Ahasuerus wanted to honor Mordecai. The king asked his most trusted adviser, Haman, how to honor the man whom the king wanted to honor, without revealing to Haman that this would be for Mordecai, a man whom Haman hated passionately. Haman thought that this was the kings way of honoring Haman. Therefore, he suggested a most lavish honor. Then the king revealed that Haman should do those very things for Mordecai. Haman was humiliated. After doing as the king told him to do, he went home and told his advisers and his wife what had happened. Here is what Esther 6:13 says,

When Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him, his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him" (Es. 6:13).

Looking at it from the eyes of Zeresh and Haman's friends, we can understand why they said that the whole secret was whether Mordecai was of Jewish descent. Look at the history of Israel in the Old Testament, a history that they knew evidently. Israel often prevailed against incredible odds, but it was also true that Israel often fell before small enemies. In fact, the Jews were in the land of Persia because an enemy prevailed over them. If it were merely being of Jewish descent that others fell before them, then the Jews never would have lost a battle or war.

Therefore, what mattered was whether Mordecai was loyal to God. If he was, then no one could prevail against him.

The same is true with you. It does not matter who you are in the flesh or to what nation you belong. Nothing matters, but being loyal to God through Jesus Christ. So then, in what do you place your trust? Look at yourself today and see in whom you trust.

Question from the text: Who suggested to the king that he hang Haman on the gallows?
