Read the Bible in a year by reading Job 14-16 today

Understand the Other Guy's Place in Life
By Don Ruhl

Read the words of Job's friends slowly and you will hear sharp words against him. He shot back at them, saying,

I also could speak as you do,
If your soul were in my souls place.
I could heap up words against you,
And shake my head at you
(Jb. 16:4).

It must have been that as he was speaking, they were shaking their heads. They had no sympathy for him and would not listen to him, believing that he was wrong. He was right; we do have the tendency to boast of what we would do if we were in another person's position. Before we have children, we claim that we will not raise our children as we see some do. If we had some person's house, we would take better care of it. You know how we think. It is easy, as Job points out, to sit in our places of comfort and accuse the other guy.

What we should do is seek to understand the other guy first. Do you try to understand the other guy's place before criticizing him? Examine yourself today and see if the moment you see someone do something with which you disagree, do you criticize him or seek to understand him first?

Question from the text: Why does Job say there is hope for a tree?
