Read the Bible in a year by reading Job 17-19 today Is There Any Purpose in Life If You Are Suffering? By Don Ruhl Poor Job. The man's suffering was incalculable. No wonder he wanted to die. I have been by the bedsides of many people who were so suffering that it was obvious that they would never recover. Then they started wondering why they were still living. They could not see any more purpose for their lives. Job thought the same thing. Listen to him, "My days are past, My purposes are broken off, Even the thoughts of my heart." (Jb. 17:11). Job was not a heathen. He knew about God and His purposes for men and women. Yet, Job was so close to death that he no longer saw a purpose for living. On the other hand, God did see a purpose for Job's life. Moreover, look at the rich material Job unintentionally gave us when his words and the words of his friends were preserved in the Book that we are reading. This is actually the fulfillment of a wish that Job expressed and you will read of it in 19:23, 24. Life is brutal, but remain with the Lord and He will carry you through all things. Question from the text: How many times did Job say his friends had reproached him? A close friend of mine, Steve Lloyd, has put together a good web site, www.closerlookbooks.com He likes to think and to make you think.
