Heavy Grief Leads to Rash Words
By Don Ruhl

Must we always speak the truth? Yes, regardless of the situation, we must speak the truth. It is also true that when we hear someone speaking from the deep grief of his heart, we should take his affliction into consideration.

Eliphaz rebuked Job for wishing to die. Then Job answered back that if his grief and calamity could be weighed, he lamented that, "it would be heavier than the sand of the sea--Therefore my words have been rash" (Jb. 6:3). He acknowledged that he had been rash in the things he said, but that those words were prompted by the heaviness of his grief. Could not his friends take that into consideration?

Let us remember that when we see someone in the middle of deep suffering that he may say things that he normally would not say. Should he speak the truth? Yes, but as he struggles through his pain, he will come to a better mind and regret what he said. Therefore, let us be patient and compassionate for him.
