This became a camping spot along the way to their new homeland, the Land of Canaan. However, it was no ordinary camping place. In fact, it was more important than the Land of Canaan itself. Moses wrote that they had left Rephidim and gone to Sinai, and camped there (v. 2a). Then He wrote, "So Israel camped there before the mountain" (v. 2b). This was the mountain of God, the mountain where God came down from heaven, manifesting great glory for Israel, speaking with Moses, and giving the Law. Israel set their sights on Canaan, but they had a surprise on the way. They met God.
