04.14.2008 Old Testament
To read the Bible in a year, read First Samuel 15 and 16 on April 14, AD 2008

The Lord Specified What He Wanted
By Don Ruhl

Samuel reminded Saul that the Lord sent him to anoint Saul as king of Israel. Therefore, Saul needed to listen to a word from the Lord by the mouth of Samuel (1Sa 15.1). Samuel reminded the new king of what Amalek did to Israel, ambushing them when they left Egypt (v. 2). For that, the Lord wanted Saul to do the following, "Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey" (v. 3). The Lord made Himself clear. Wipe out the Amalekites and everything they have. Israel could not spare anyone or anything. Saul did most of what the Lord commanded, leaving alive only the king and the best of the animals. However, the Lord does not take pleasure in His people doing most of what He commands. He wants us to do it all. For Saul's disobedience, the Lord rejected him as king of Israel.

Have you convinced yourself that you have done most of what the Lord commanded and that it is enough? Reexamine yourself and rededicate yourself to follow the Lord fully.
