04.19.2008 Old Testament
To read the Bible in a year, read First Samuel 27-29 on April 19, AD 2008

Fighting One Another Hurts Us
By Don Ruhl

Saul pursued David relentlessly. Yet, David would not attack Saul, even when the opportunity came up. Finally, "David said in his heart, 'Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand'" (1Sa 27.1). Saul drove away the best warrior and servant he had and that warrior took with him other excellent warriors, "Then David arose and went over with the six hundred men who were with him to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath" (v. 2). That meant that David's family and the families of his men, also went with him (v. 3). Finally, Saul gave up pursuing David (v. 4).

Saul shamed his own life by driving away such a man as David. How many in the church have shamed themselves and the Lord by their relentless attacks on good men and women in the church?
