Read the Bible in a Year This evening read First Corinthians 9 Those Who Excel Exercise Self-Control Watch a successful athlete. Observe a prosperous businessman. Look at anyone who excels and you will see someone who exercises self-control. Why do they exercise self-control? There is something that they want to win and they shave off anything that will impede their victory and add what is necessary to win. Now, listen to Paul, 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown (1 Cor. 9:25). If they will exercise temperance, that is, self-control, to win money, recognition, and so on, things that are only temporary, let us who are striving for a much greater prize, give ourselves even more to self-control.
