Read the Bible in a Year This evening read First Corinthians 16 A Great Opportunity in the Wake of Hurricane Katrina A famine struck the land of Israel and the Christians there were suffering. This is partly why Paul wrote First Corinthians 16. Therefore, Paul set up the teaching about contributing into the church's treasury every first day of the week. Concerning taking the contribution to the people in Jerusalem, Paul said, 9 For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries (1 Cor. 16:9). Paul saw this disaster as more than an opportunity to feed, clothe, and house people, but he saw an opportunity to bring men and women to the Lord. You do not need me to tell you of the disaster that struck the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. It is the same opportunity for us that the famine was in Israel. If you wish to contribute to this opportunity, you can write a check to Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, 410 Allied Drive, Nashville, Tennessee, 37211, or write a check to the church (address below) with which I work and we will forward it (be sure to let us know that it is for the opportunity that Hurricane Katrina has presented).
