Read the Bible in a Year This evening read the Book of Jonah Have You Called Upon God? Do you remember the story of Jonah? God commanded the prophet to go to Nineveh and cry out against it. Jonah did not want to do it. Therefore, he fled in the opposite direction, getting on a ship that sailed out into the Mediterranean. However, no one tells God no and refuses to do what He commands. Therefore, He sent a mighty storm against the ship that was close to tearing the ship to pieces. What was Jonah doing? He was sleeping down below, oblivious to the world. He had the solution to the problem, but was doing nothing about it. The idolatrous captain of the ship had at least some idea what to do. So the captain came to him, and said to him, What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish. (Jonah 1:6, NKJV) Here was a child of God asleep while the world was struggling with disaster. How could Jonah sleep when he knew that he was in rebellion against God? How could the prophet be asleep when the ship was about to be destroyed by a horrible storm? How could a man of God not care about anything in this situation? Why had the son of Abraham not imitated Abraham and called upon God? What are the troubles in the world around you? Have you called upon God to help the situation? Are you the problem, as was Jonah? Have you gone before the throne of God, opened your heart before Him, and by prayer sought peace for the world around you?
