1) Welcome

    Hello All,
Welcome to this edition of Eternal Ink. We would especially like to
welcome our new subscribers. It's our hope that you will be as blessed by
Eternal Ink as we are by putting it together for you.

Quite a bit has been going on since we last met. We updated our
listing in Sally Stuarts Christian Writers Market Guide, for one. I have been
working, feverishly, with Jane Fulton to create a $3 an ad campaign for
Christian ezines *only*,
and just run of the mill stuff that goes along with producing an ezine.

You will notice that we have added a new feature today and will be
instituting more to keep our content fresh. Today we offer a "Bible Study"
which can be used by Sunday School teachers along with appropriate
activities. We also have some prayer requests along with reader feedback. We
encourage both. If you have a prayer request or would like to comment on
anything in Eternal Ink,please send it to: davidh@...

Delighting in the Law of the Lord

Psalm One describes the blessed life of the man who does not walk in
the way of the wicked. When we begin our walk with the Lord, we are very
careful to follow His teachings, but often the tempting persuasiveness of
those who do what they want to do becomes an appealing distraction along the
way. The sunny easy-going seductiveness of some of those who follow no
principles but their own is a temptation we must not treat lightly. There
is real danger for the Christian down the casual way of doing exactly as one
pleases.

Psalm One is a powerful anecdote to going one's own way. The blessed
man avoids wicked counsel and the company of mockers and scoffers. Because
the righteous are rooted in the Word of God, they are like a tree planted by
"streams of living water." This source for living produces good fruit and a
productive life. The Lord watches over and protects the righteous.

The wicked are like "chaff that the wind blows away." These people
will not be able to stand up under judgment, nor be welcome in the
fellowship of those who follow God. Their way will perish.

It is sobering to realize that even good people are tested, winnowed
and tried by life's experiences. We see that Old Testament Job is "sifted"
by Satan. While God allows Satan to control Job's possessions, the Lord
clearly protects Job and warns Satan not to harm him. Even with the loss of
much that he holds dear, Job will not curse God and die. He discusses his
situation with his friends, but he will not let go of his belief in God. In
the era before Christ, Job is in the unenviable position of trying to rely
on his own righteousness, but his faith sees him through the trial. In the
end, Job prospers, but not without a series of experiences that severely
test his faith.

Satan is also allowed to test the disciple Peter. From the "easy,"
almost glib position that he will never forsake his Lord, Peter is forced to
discover who he really is in relation to his Lord and where he really is in
his Christian walk. Impetuous Peter, so eager to defend the Lord, so eager
to do something really big for His Kingdom, has to confront honestly his
real limits and weaknesses. Most readers ache for the Peter who denies
Jesus three times the night Jesus is tried. Most readers rejoice for the
Peter described in John 21 who honestly admits his shortfall of agape love,
but who is earnestly trying for all he's worth to love Jesus as a friend.

The glowing wonder of God's love is that Peter reaches the goal. In
following a path of loving Jesus as best as he is able and living a devoted
life of Christian service, Peter finally achieves the unselfish agape love
that causes him to know fully who he is in Jesus. After preaching and
teaching, loving and serving for years, Peter is crucified upside down on a
cruel cross. Believing he is not worthy to die like Jesus, he dies humbly
with absolute faith in the power of his beliefs. We can only guess at his
joyous reunion with His Lord, not this time by the Sea of Galilee, but by
the crystal sea, with no barriers between him and the Lamb of God.

Walking the walk is more action than talk, but if we are rooted in the
Word of God and the love of Jesus' way, we will find ourselves with no sea
between us and what we hold most dear. All the love we have given and
received will be at home with Jesus as we fully understand for the first
time who we are in the light of God's love.

Now here's a Philosophy for life!!!

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark...
  One: Don't miss the boat.
Two: Remember that we are all in the same boat.
Three: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
Four: Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do
something really big.
Five: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be
done.
Six: Build your future on high ground.
Seven: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
Eight: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the
cheetahs.
Nine: When you're stressed, float a while.
Ten: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by
  professionals.
Eleven: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a
  rainbow waiting.

NOW, wasn't that nice? Pass it along and make someone else smile, too.

Samuel

Hannah had no children. One day she prayed to God, "If you give me a
son, he will serve You all his life." God heard her prayer and Hannah
had a son she named Samuel. Hannah never forgot her promise to God.
So when Samuel was about three years old, she took him to the temple.
Samuel lived there and helped the priest Eli. Samuel learned the word
of God and to serve Him. You can learn His word and serve Him too.
You can pray, sing, help others and tell others about Jesus.

--Memory Verse:
My heart rejoices in the Lord.
-- 1 Samuel 2:1

You can make a special name plate for everyone to see.
Here's how -
Materials:
A small sheet of poster board
scissors
crayons or markers
hole punch
16" pieces of yarn
clear self-stick paper
(Optional) glue, plus stickers, glitter or other decorations
Directions:
Write your name in large letters at the top. Then write "Serves God"
underneath your name. Decorate your name plate with optional
decorative items. Carefully cover the plate with clear, self-
stick paper. Punch out two holes at the very top and thread your yarn
through each hole and knot. Your name plate can hang over your
bedroom door, your bicycle handlebars, etc. for everyone to see.

One night while Samuel was in bed he heard a voice call his name.
Samuel thought Eli, the priest, had called him. He got up and ran to
where Eli was sleeping.
Samuel said, "Here I am"
Eli said, "I didn't call you. Go back to bed, Samuel."
Samuel went back to bed.
Again the voice called, "Samuel!"
Samuel thought, it must be Eli. So Samuel went to Eli.
But no, Eli did not call him.
So, Samuel went back to bed.
The voice called out Samuel's name again.
Samuel went back to where Eli was and said, "Here I am".
Eli knew it was God calling Samuel. So Eli said, "God is calling you.
Next time, tell Him you will listen."
Samuel returned back to his bed.
Once more the voice called "Samuel!"
Samuel replied "I'm listening Lord."
Samuel listened to what God told him.
Samuel listened and obey God all his life.
You can be like Samuel. Listen to what God wants you to do and obey
Him.

--Memory Verse:
Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
--1 Samuel 3:10

When God saw Samuel, He didn't look at his young age. God saw a young
man who was willing to listen and obey Him. Samuel was very eager to
learn about God and ready and willing to hear whatever it was the
Lord needed to say to him. Samuel wanted to spend his life serving
God.

--Memory Verse:
The Lord looks at the heart.
--1 Samuel 16:7

Make a special - Promise Keeper!
Here's how -
Materials:
plain paper (optional construction paper)
crayons or markers
paper plates
staplers
scissors
(optional) glue, plus glitter, stickers, or other decorations
Directions:
Draw different size stars on your paper (big enough to cut out but
not too big) - optionally use construction paper. Cut them out and
decorate them with glitter, stickers, crayons, markers, etc. Let dry.
Cut one paper plate in half. Staple one half onto a new whole paper
plate to make a pocket. Draw the words "Promise Keeper" onto the half
plate piece in front. Decorate the whole thing and let dry
if needed. Every time you make a promise and keep it, you should put
one of your decorated stars into the Promise Keeper. Find out how
many stars you can collect each week.

Questions:

Whose voice was it that Samuel heard calling his name?

What can you do to learn about God and ways you can serve Him?

Was Samuel's young age a problem? Why or why not?
