COLUMN: Reality Check

Charmed, I'm Sure
by Stan Mitchell

The words to an old song struck me anew the other
day, one phrase in particular. Palmer Hartsough
writes:

"I am resolved no longer to linger,
Charmed by the world's delight."

I think that's it in a word. Christians are
"charmed" by the world. Cheap and temporary, the
pleasures of this life nonetheless wrap themselves
in tinsel and glitter, and the effect charms us.
We are hypnotized by sinful lifestyles as depicted
on television. We are lured by the suddenly new
urge to purchase more things. Advertising stirs to
life our deep desires for one more toy, one more
trinket that will bring us fulfillment.

And the only thing that will keep us from
succumbing is resolve. Good, old-fashioned
determination not to be taken in. Like the cobra
that charms, then strikes at the field mouse, we
have to employ an act of will to resist. If we
don't, we will be snake bit.

"Do not love the world, or the things in the
world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
father is not in him" (1 John 2:15).
