I used icons (picts) in picture fields for the toolbar.
I process the tool clicked with
dlgEvent%=_efClick
then 
SELECT dlgID%
for the tool clicked
There is no reason this should not work for edit fields.
Actually, when I first developed the toolbar, it used picture and edit fields.
The picture fields contained the icon and the edit fields the text.
I later removed the text edit fields for compactness.
