Someone recommended the book 'Mother Tongue' for insights into the history
of English as a language. While I found this amusing - my mother offered me
the book for Xmas - the large number of inaccurate assertions about the
French language, for which i _do_ have a little knowledge, incites me to
cast doubt on other assertions that the book makes [or it may just be a
reflection of the old English/French antagonisms that rubbed off on the
author during his 'sejour' on those murky isles up north...]
