At our school we got a slug of 5400's and 5500's. Wouldn't start,
terrible delays ...like 3 seconds for a menu in the finder and generally acted
goofy. Sometimes after a freeze they won't start at all. It seems that if
they are turned off (no AC) for a while they will start. Apple sent a CD and
said that the hard drive driver was bad. We have replaced the driver. (Be
careful with the CD as Update driver is not one of the buttons on the main
screen. Initialize is. You must find Update in a menu.)
Some machines began to behave while others continued to have problems.
At least two had major error in the drives. I am assuming the bad driver and
so many freezes and mis-starts caused errors.

     and...the CDs are noisy.
