The 24XCD on my G3 sound more like a hover-craft.
That's OK with me, because it really flies on a few CD-based databases that I own.

I noticed something interesting when the first Macs with cooling fans hit the market.
(Remember the Mac Plus? Almost no moving parts.)
At work the new fan-cooled Macs seemed quiet, but at home all I could hear was the fan whinning away.
In reality, even a white collar office environment is noisy enough to drown-out the minor nuisance 
noises of most computers.
