Joe, 

Yes, Normal distribution, Gaussian distribution and Bell Curve (as it is 
usually used) all refer to the same distribution. This distribution 
occurs in nature for many quantities that have some variability, a common 
example being heights of individuals. Sometimes one wants to simulate 
such variability in a set of data, and then uses the Normal distribution 
to do it.
