Didn't Apple increase the number of files one could have open at any one
time in the last few releases of the OS?  This would explain differences
between OS versions in the number of files one could process.  Differences
between two users running the same OS version could be due to other
processes (INITs, concurrently running programs, etc) having open files of
their own.
