Thanks Phil. Here's what I have found out:
The USB products cannot deliver real time monitoring (or capture) at
640x480 or larger.
USB transfer is effectively limited to 320x240. Still capture at 640x480
is possible but not easily monitored and the resulting image may be of
significantly less quality than a Firewire device can deliver.

I am down to deciding between 2 Firewire devices:
1) Dazzle Hollywood-DV bridge ($259 at on-line malls)
2) Sony DVMC-DA2 ($359 at on-line malls)
Both of these devices are A-D and D-A, Firewire, and priced within $100.
Dazzle is newer and sounds good (to a video novice like me).
Sony is in the second generation, but sounds more limited.

Anyone know anything about these products?
