There are no simple questions.

There are no dumb questions.

What does MIDI manager do for a living? If one wanted to write an FB-ish
thing for MIDI, why not just spout out your chosen port at 38400 - and read
it too, if applicable? I've never tried it, but probably will tonight, just
for sport.

Is MIDI clocked (synchronous)? If so, that would muddy the water somewhat. I
do remember sniffing at a MIDI port once, and it didn't seem to be
clocked...

I once spent a month trying to talk through some National Instruments
software driver to a 232-to-GPIB convertor, with little success. The
solution was to forget the NI software, and just talk to their box. Could
the MIDI driver be the same thing?

And Mr. Tomlinson:

See the mess you can cause by asking a simple question? Isn't it neat?

You may never see an answer to your question, but you will see a lot of
(often poorly guided) lateral thinking...
