um, how about giving your users a program that clears the clipboard?

if they get the error message, they run that program, then try again.

tell them the problem is caused by word, and microsoft won't fix it,
(two believable lines, albeit totally untrue, but delicious nonetheless),
so you've thoughtfully provided them with the solution to this problem
in the event they encounter it.  voila... you're the hero.            ;+)
