Dear Jonathan,

you have written:

acting on this i would suppose that a 'safe' save procedure should do the
following:
*************************************************
- determine that there is enough space on the target volume
- create a file in the temp folder of that volume
- transfer the original file to trash
- transfer the saved file from temp to target folder
- delete the temp file

question:
am i being [overly] paranoid?
has anyone done this?
does the system do it like this anyway?
*************************************************

Actually, I use a similar Apple approved strategy (see IM-Files) with my "UpDater".

1. Look if there is enough room for a copy of the Application plus the space
you need if it's updated
2. Create a duplicate of the original Application in the Temp-folder
3. Update the duplicate
4. If nothing went wrong, replace the original Application by the updated one

Best,

Herbie
