thanks michele!

after a couple false-starts, i finally got the program running,
and my g3 powerbook is now frequently propped up on its side,
with a portrait-oriented monitor instead of a landscape one.
(always used an external keyboard anyway, so no difference there.)

this gives me a full-page screen (minus a small margin all around),
which is the way monitors should have been from the very beginning.
(the "bravo" prototype out of p.a.r.c. was in just that orientation...)
