640*480, or 640*450 to account for the menubar, yes 
that is indeed the correct answer to your simple question.

there is a problem with your simple question, though, and 
i should've made clear that this next step was my concern.

the problem is that -- for any user that has set a resolution 
that is extremely high -- that 640*450 window shrinks to 
difficult-and-maybe-impossible-to-read-and-interact-with.

and _that's_ why you need to make the window resizeable.

understand that doesn't necessarily mean _user_-resizeable,
it could mean _program_-auto-resized, but why not let the user?
