Do you have Easy Open on by any chance? That will do a desktop rebuild on
occasion.

What I am talking about is the massive hacking one must do to get the
normal file list filtering to work properly Files$ with "TEXTJPEG" etc. and
Nav Services. This isn't limited to 8.1 though, happens with 9 also on
occasion. RP has come up with some workarounds.

Personally ,I dislike Nav Services. Seems unintuitive in use and less
direct than the original, and takes a very long time showing up,
particularly in 8.6. Not too much benefit I can tell with the whole deal,
other than it looks better than the older style. :)
