No, there are transmitters conneted to transmitters and receivers connected
to receivers in that cable. A transmitter _must_ be connected to a receiver.

The Mac has a differential output, while rs232 has a single ended output.
On the Mac , it is the difference between the tx+ and Tx- pins that are of
interest. Usually this is also equivalent to the swing of Tx+ about ground.
