you are supposing that the symptom is the first sign of bit rot.
this may not be the case. whatever. only a lowlevel reformat
will mark badblocks as not available and thus ensure
that stuff will not get reinstalled over.

it looks from aunty bob's post that he has a bad block where
one of his quicktime extensions should be.

it is 'normal' to a certain extent to lose blocks over the
life of a disk [this is also a good reason for using HFS+
as the blocks are as small as possible in this case].

but, if this starts happening with greater frequency, then
herbie is right. buy a new disk and start from zero.

btw, this is also why you should keep important backups on
at least two different supports...
