this is a javaesque 'feature' that slipped in from nextstep.
if you look at some common files in x you will see
for the creator strange things like:
com.apple.appleworks document.

i imagine that these are fixed in the apps plist somewhere.
most applications come 'clean' though. BBEdit, for example,
just says, "BBEdit text file" and that suits me fine.
[also BBEdit works better than Apfelwerks but I don't think
this is related. or perhaps I have just stumpled onto
sum phing heir...]
