Actually, OPEN "C" does it just fine, since the comm toolbox (and whatever may or may not have replaced it in X) seems to provide a sort of global list of the available serial ports which other applications (like FB through its FBInitSerialPorts) can use just like the old MODEM and PRINTER ports.
