Data Rescue is the only one that may work...but if he has re-initialized it, it may well be gone for good. I would try DiskWarrior, but the results there may be doomed as well, due to the original directory being erased. But he may luck out with a newer version. So, Data Rescue? (now sold by Prosoft) If the files aren't erased (he didn't do a reformat/partition) then they may still be recoverable.
