tedd,

My understanding (which may be somewhat incomplete), is that in OSX a
pointer is as good as a handle, so there is seldom any need to use
handles. The reason for this is that pointers no longer "point"
directly to memory, but are buffered through the Virtual Memory system,
so they in effect are really handles anyway.

Offhand, I can't think of a situation where a handle would really be
required in X.
