Hello all,
I would like to preface this post with an expression of my gratitude for all
of the selfless help I have received from members of this list. It has been
truly gratifying.
Now, I would like to correct what I perceive as a misconception of what I am
proposing as a remedy for the missing underscores. I am NOT proposing that
EVERY posting of code use substitute characters for underscores. That would be
unfair and I can understand your objecting to it. What I am proposing is that
those affected be allowed to REQUEST that answers to their queries, which
contain code, use substitution.
If, as you say, only a few are affected by this malady, then the conversion
would only be needed a few times. (I always get missing underscores)
As to the other suggestions given in this thread about remedies for those
affected let me address those individually.
1.>The best transmogrification modifier is as Ken does, just say "watch for
missing underscores" -- >Robert C.
The problem with this, Robert, is that those asking for help may not be
skilled at identifying which words need underscores. They (I) need a little help.
On one posting I copied, I missed 3 which resulted in a program that ran but
crashed. Jay was kind enough to post a version enhanced with remarks that
identified where the underscores were. Which brings me to the next point.
2. >I think a comment-area-constants-list up top would be fine enough to do a
quick F/R. -- Robert C.
Robert, have you ever timed “typing comments” vs. “F/R substitution”? I
have. It took me about 40 sec. to transfer the program Jay helped me with from
the FB editor to an email including the F/R procedure. It took me over 2 minutes
to hunt down the underscores and type in the remarks.
3. >...filtering could change and make the substitution character unusable.--
Brian S.
I don’t see this as a problem. How many times has the filtering changed over
the life of this list? My answer, adapt to any such change. And isn’t the code
sans underscores unusable anyway?
4. >I'd prefer (instead of doing the suggested find/replace) to send the code
via private email (as an attachment) if notified of corrupted underscores. --
Brian Stevens.
Brian, I’ll ask the same question I asked of Robert in item 2 above, have you
timed it out? I have. F/R substitution takes about 40 sec including pasting
it into an email. Depending how far you need to navigate to get the file you
are attaching, it can take anywhere from 90 seconds to 3 minutes. I’ve tried it
with several files. I see no advantage in this.
I certainly have no objection if responders want to do #2 or #4 above to help
me with underscores, but my way is faster. I just want to get the help.
