It is very painful to write custom column code.
I've done it a few times.  The amount of code needed to do anything remotely complex is way too much for my taste.

Cool! :-(

That explains why I didn't find any solution about the background 
with DataBrowser For Dummies running under OS X. I can however offer 
the stripped background feature with Mac OS 9 at the expense of a 
very convoluted code patching QuickDraw like a butcher.

I thought about using custom columns, but frankly it would have been 
tantamount to rewriting the DataBrowser control from scratch or so.
