That might be a start. I remember  a hack to the files$ code (i.e the 
runtime) by Jamin that might be helpful if I can dig it up (and you 
feel comfortable changing the runtime). I believe George uses Jamin's 
hack. Maybe George will chime in since I can't remember it.  I'll post 
Jamin's hack if I find it.
