Hi all -
I am having some confusion about the maximum allowable length of file
names. It used to be (in OS9) that filenames were limited to 31
characters max, but with OSX (10.3.9 at least) this does not seem to
be a limit anymore. In the OSX finder and some applications (such as
BBedit 7.1.2), I can use longer names and the file is treated
civilly. Inside some apps (such as Appleworks 6.2.9), the long name
is truncated to 31 characters with the last 7 characters being in the
form '#HHHHHH'. After modification, this file can be saved back to
the disk with the original file name appearing - if the file name is
not edited in the application. FB^4 seems to follow the short
filename rules - it seems as though OSX is shielding some apps (maybe
carbon ones?) from long file names, while at the same time preserving
the app's ability to read and modify (but not create) these long name
files.
Can anybody comment on this, and are there any docs about this
available somewhere?
Thanks,
Walter Lenk
