The remote computers could all share a common preferences file that you 
could have each application write to it to indicate that it is running 
and the other apps could read this file to determine that the remote 
machines are running the application. On quite, the application would 
log off by writing that info to the file.

Communicating directly between applications through http using the 
machine IP addresses would be interesting to me as well since I have a 
project coming up that will require that.
