I've seen a similar situation where a file can't be trashed after it was opened by an app (as often as not, Preview) until that app is quit. Apparently, something thinks that the document is still open in, or, perhaps, readily available to, that app. I've not yet found a case where a file can't be trashed - and trash emptied - with nothing but Finder running. -- Ted -- So many books...
