As far as I remember, FB never guaranteed what was called 
Carbon-behaviour, which at the beginning of the OSX era meant that 
such apps run flawlessly under MacOS 9.2.2 as well as OS 10.x without 
special care. (Actually, I managed to create such Carbon apps, but 
they required testing under MacOS 9.x _and_ OSX and the corresponding 
code tweaking.)

That said, you've been lucky in realizing only a minor misbehavior 
under OSX with an app tested and compiled under MacOS 9.2.2 only.

I'm aware of the fact that my comment isn't helpful for finding the 
flaw but it may at least explain that such behavior is to be expected.
