Hi RC,  Apple has tried to fix the multiple methods that can be used  
to identify files by creating Uniform Type Identifiers ( UTIs). There  
is a very short explanation and introduction in the Apple doc titled  
"Uniform Type Identifiers Overview". It is available in Xcode docs and  
also at Apple's developer web site.  ( ADC Home > Reference Library >  
Guides > Carbon > Data Management > Uniform Type Identifiers  
Overview>).  Apple's "Navigation Services Programming Guide" also  
contains good information for using UTIs with Nav Services but I would  
read the overview first.
