I've used "Sound Studio" version 2.0.7 from Felt Tip Software ( www.felttip.com 
  ). The about window shows as "Licensed to: Apple Systems Bundle", so  
I must have gotten it with one of my systems. My Quicktime version  
( 7.6.6 ) has audio export features but I haven't explored them and  
they might have AIFF to .snd.

Async playing of an AIFF is interesting and presumably something that  
has already been done.
