As you are using vanilla flavored FB, chances are that it's you, not FB,
that is doing the midsdemeanours (?).

* for updating, try playing around with visrgn, but if you're getting 
  flicker, rather than a redraw, then you're proabably calling drawing 
stuff
  twice, and it might be here that your windows are getting sent all over 
the place.
