What's likely happened is that the mail database index got corrupted. The 
proper way to correct this with Emailer v2.x is to hold down the Option 
key while launching Emailer. You will get a dialog that presents 2 
options for rebuilding the index (Typical and Advanced). If your mail 
database is large, it can take quite a while to rebuild (mine takes >20 
minutes on a G3/266!). This is the only proper way to fix mail database 
problems. I've got an 80+MB mail database at the present time and have 
only had a problem such as you describe one time about a year ago. 
Rebuilding the index solved it for me.

That said, I don't remember if this also applies to Emailer v1.x, since 
the messages were stored as separate files rather than in a single mail 
database...worth a try though...
